Che was born two weeks early. He was due July 28, 2004. He was born July 17, 2004.
We went in the morning of the 15th for a non-stress test (Malikha had a low amniotic fluid reading a week earlier) and the weekly visit. Her blood pressure was a little bit high, so the doctor wanted her monitored. After several hours of being monitored, the doctors decided that it would be best to induce Malikha. Her platelettes were low, her blood pressure was fluctuating and at 38 weeks, the baby's fully developed.
That evening (15th), they started Malikha on a low dosage of pitocin. Between the frequent nurse visits throughout the night and our excitement, we got very little sleep. The next morning, they bumped the pitocin up to a normal dosage. After several hours, Malikha was contracting only slightly, so they broke her water, which helped kick the contractions and dilation up for a little while. By evening, the doctors began to notice that Malikha wasn't really progressing and slowly increased the medication. After six hours with no futher dilation, they told us that they would have to deliver by C-section. After some prepping, they had me come in to the delivery/operation room. About 15-30 minutes(?) passed and the doctor told me the baby was coming. I stood up and looked over the screen (and took some pictures, as I was instructed by Malikha) as they delivered our baby. We heard the cry and they told us it was a healthy boy. A few minutes later I was able to go over and see him and hold him. I brought him over to Malikha, who was extrememly tired, as well as anesthetized, so she could say hi. Malikha had to recover because of the operation and the baby had to go to the nursery for routine evaluation. Malikha finally got to hold him about five hours after he was born.
